Is it time you upgrade to an oil condensing boiler?

12 2017 Author: Marlene Gray

Boilers account for about 55% of what the average household spends in a year on energy bills, so having an efficient boiler can make a big difference.

Well maintained boilers burn their fuel very economically, but they unavoidably lose some heat in the hot gases that escape up the flue. A condensing boiler has a larger heat exchanger, so it recovers more heat, sends cooler gases up the flue and is more efficient. Carbon dioxide gases that would normally be emitted into the atmosphere through the flue are condensed, recycled and used to heat the water. This significantly reduces the amount of carbon dioxide emitted annually into the atmosphere by boilers, and as old oil boilers are replaced with the new condensing versions each year, the UK’s carbon footprint is further reduced. The boilers have the added bonus of being more energy efficient and costing less to operate.

Almost all oil fired central heating used in the UK on a domestic level uses 28sec oil – also known as Kerosene.  28sec oil burns very cleanly leaving minimal deposits such as smoke and soot on after burn.

When looking to replace an old boiler, there are a few things that you should take into consideration:

  • The most important considerations are safety, efficiency and the ability of the boiler to handle the size of the home or building.
  • Oil fired boilers that are too small will not provide enough heat or hot water, while boilers which are too large will cause needless expenses.
  • The size of the boiler needed for a particular house is determined by the size of the house and how well it is insulated.
  • The number of showers, baths and sinks in the house will affect the size of boiler needed.
  • How many rooms need to be heated, the size of the radiators and whether or not the house has a terrace.
